We offer more than 20 standard finishes at Conant Metal and Light. Here is an overview. But first, a word about sealing options.
Sealing Options
When choosing a finish, it is important to consider whether to request a protective coating. Some finishes will have a long life with no protection, while others are relatively unstable and should be sealed.
Sometimes the effects of the natural aging process are desired, so the piece is left unsealed. Another option on a naturally aged finish is to coat the surface with a layer of wax to provide temporary protection against unsightly marks left by fingerprints during installation. The following lists give specific details.
- Gloss Lacquer (GL): A high gloss, nitrocellulose-based protective coating. Removable with paint stripper.
- Satin Lacquer (SL): A low sheen, nitrocellulose-based protective coating. Removable with paint stripper.
- Wax (W): A microcrystalline paste wax used for short-term surface protection. Removable with soap and water or solvents.
- Natural (N): No protective coating.
NOTE: A lacquer coating will postpone changes to a finish only if it is properly maintained. Sunlight, heat, moisture, salt air and caustic or abrasive cleaners will deteriorate a lacquer coating. To clean a lacquered surface use only a soft, damp cloth. All of our fixtures are solid brass, bronze or copper, so if the need arises, they can be refinished, ensuring generations of use.
