UL Listing “UL” stands for "Underwriters Laboratory." Underwriters Laboratory used to be an Insurance Industry organization, but now it is an independent, nonprofit organization that tests electrical components and equipment for fire and shock hazards. When something is UL-listed, it means that UL has tested the device and determined that it does not pose a safety hazard.
It is perfectly legal to buy and install non-UL-listed devices in homes and businesses; however, virtually all new lights and electrical components meet UL safety standards and display the UL label as evidence.
At Conant Metal & Light, we use UL-listed components in all of our lighting. There occasionally are times when using UL-listed components would jeopardize the historical integrity of an antique fixture, however. In these instances, we may recommend foregoing the UL listing in favor of historical accuracy. We will work with you to determine the appropriate solution when this is an issue.
